Who is Lady Gaga, seriously? She basically came out of nowhere and has, in the past 12 months, taken the throne for most ridiculous/unusual/awesome icon in pop music.

And I’m in love with her.

I mean, in a non romantic way –  I’m engaged, so I mean love in a strictly idealistic I want to be on her way.

And I don’t know why.

Really, I don’t. Her music is catchy, but the same can be said for a lot of other pop musicians. She’s not overly attractive but then again, there’s something about those geometric outfits and masks that has me all up in arms.

I’ve wrestled with this for a while now – and somewhere between watching her Youtube, buying her CDs, and contemplating buying a $200 ticket to her show in Chicago (which I didn’t – by the way – but it was a tough call) I’ve settled on the fact that she has to be putting something in the Kool-Aid.

Have you ever seen that episode of Saved by the Bell where Zack taps into the power of subliminal messaging? It’s not long before he uses a Paul Revere tape to brainwash Kelly into asking him to the Sweetheart Dance and a Beach Boys tape to talk Mr. Belding out of a parent-teacher conference. Of course, in true SBTB fashion, the gang gets wise to his act and the plan backfires, resulting in the entire school falling head over heels (including Slater) for the “blonde Tom Cruise”.

It seems totally ridiculous, right? But maybe it’s not too farfetched. In fact, I think it’s entirely possible that Lady Gaga has us all under her control. The ridiculous Kermit coats, the transsexual rumors. Please – it’s all part of her ploy to spread Gaga fever. Grown men everywhere are finding themselves belting out “Pa pa pa Poker Face” while they drive to work. Even I want to take a ride on the disco stick. It’s sad and somehow perfect, all at the same time.

So cheers to you, Lady Gaga, you’ve got us all under your spell, and there’s no clear end in sight.

This has to be one of the best posts you’ve written, if only for the fact that you cited Zack Morris. Kudos to you Matt!

And I agree, I have a total girl crush on Lady Gaga!

Haha – it’s sad really, that I’m this much in love with “the Lady”. What can I say? I’m gaga over Gaga. I think I get infinity bonus points for tying together Saved by the Bell and Lady Gaga in the same post, right?

Bravo Matt!

When “Just Dance” came out I was instantly hooked, and I was pleasantly surprised to find I would enjoy each song on her first CD, “The Fame”.

What I like about her is that she isn’t some no talent ass hole. Lady Gaga was actually trained at one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, let alone the country – Juilliard in New York. Check out a classical version of Paparazzi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAd29GlCKf4

Nothing against art school students, but they are a bit ‘different’. Lady Gaga is surely different, but I’m convinced that among all of her oddity, she is one of the most talented pop stars we’ve seen in years.

I too almost went to the concert in Philly a week or so ago, she was performing with Kid Cudi who is also another new favorite of mine. If it wasn’t for the concert behind held in a pretty rough place in South Jersey (an extension of Philadelphia) then I would have surely went.

Maybe you, Jenny, and I will soon go to one of her concerts together. How about it?

Sounds like a plan man.

I think that’s when I really fell in love – when I found out that behind all the autotuned tunes on her album she was actually pretty damn talented, and has a “real” good voice. That, and only she can pull off wearing geometrical leotards. If only I could pull that off…

Um I’d lik to be included in the Lady Gaga concert outing, thank you very much. Sheesh!

Matt, Saved by the Bell is probably my all time favorite show from adolescence so if anyone can work that into a credible argument, they win brownie points with me!

I love this post! I am also obsessed by Lady Gaga even though I don’t want to be- but her songs are so damn catchy! I also think she’s made pop fun again. After Britney’s breakdown and Christina going “mature”, there was a void in pop for the unpredictable. Cue Lady Gaga’s entrance. I think she’s very intelligent and she knows exactly what she’s doing- and the rest of us are watching to see what crazy outfit she wears next. She’s got the music to back it up, so I’ll take more Lady Gaga please!

It’s my all time favorite show from adolescence, and I still watch it every morning on TBS – do you get that over in Paris? Probably not a big thing in that neck of the woods. Saved by the Bell, Nine Inch Nails, Lady Gaga…can someone say soulmates?

@Sheema – I agree with you – I think behind all the ridiculousness is a very savvy businesswoman who knows what she’s doing. Look at me…still swooning…need a cold shower.

Lady Gaga on MTV boiling points in 2005. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SIK-yzlxiU

It’s all an act. I always just remember the H.L. Mencken quote, “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American People.”

Thanks again for this awesome post Matt. And to Matt’s readers, “I want your ugly, I want your disease.. RAWR RAWR RAWR.”

@Sheema – I agree – I think the best part about her ridiculousness is that she can actually sing. I saw her on Ellen a couple weeks ago and was impressed with both her singing and her interview demeanor.
@Rich – Ummm YES. Lady Gaga concert for sure!!
@Ken – Nice quote. The lady is one smart biatch. That’s fo sho.

@Ken – wow – that looks absolutely NOTHING like her – so crazy.
